Men’s hockey has always been the Eagle’s specialty. BC has dominated Hockey East and national opponents alike year in and year out. The perennial power that is Boston College has not totally faltered this year either. Entering this Friday’s Hockey East semifinal versus Maine, the Eagles are ranked tenth in the country. Chris Collins is a front runner for the Hobey Baker award and if Cory Schneider gets hot, he can steal games. BC will once again be a formidable opponent in both the Hockey East Tournament and the NCAA tournament.

The women’s hoops team is also getting into the action. Entering the NCAA tournament as an 8 seed, the Eagles take on rival Notre Dame in the first round. Though Boston College faltered down the stretch and in the ACC tournament, bruising forward Brooke Queenan and steady point guard Sarah Marshall will hopefully help the Eagles soar to success.

Other less heralded sports have also seen late winter success. The women’s hockey team entered the national rankings for the first time and the sailing team has regained the top spot in the country away from warm weather sailing rivals like USC and Hawaii. It seems as though the theme of excellence has consumed BC athletics.

However, the one team that has caught everyone’s eyes has been the men’s basketball team. After a horrid start to the season, the Eagles have rebounded down the stretch, including a stellar performance in the ACC tournament. The Eagles have a #4 seed in the NCAA tournament and have been a popular pick to do well. Both ESPN analysts Dick Vitale and Andy Katz have BC in the final four and the New York Times has picked Boston College to win the national title. These are just three of the riders of the BC bandwagon. Many are sure to board as the Eagles continue to roll through opponents.

Make sure to catch as much BC action as you can and Go Eagles!

The following are the top five games to see at Boston College this winter. Read on to see which contests make the cut.

5. Women’s Basketball vs. Duke
That’s right. Another women’s hoops game makes the cut. Poke fun as you will but this will be a game. The undefeated, second ranked Duke women’s squad comes to Conte Forum with their All-American Monique Currie at the helm. They may be good but BC will beat them. Why? Because this is a BC column.

4. Men’s Ice Hockey vs. Vermont
Vermont may be one of the biggest surprises in college hockey this year. However, the Eagles have already taken down the Catamounts once this year on their home ice behind two goals from BC’s own mighty mouse Nate Gerbe With the freshmen coming on strong and BC starting to hit their stride, the hippies from up north will be lucky to escape from Chestnut Hill with any points in this crucial Hockey East series.

3. Men’s Basketball vs. Wake Forest
ACC basketball has been highly anticipated at the Heights and its games like this that gets everyone excited. Granted Wake has lost Chris Paul to “the league” but they still have Justin Gray who some say is above average. That won’t be enough against the Eagles. On the bright side for the Deacons, they get to see how a student section should dress. Have you ever seen those ridiculous shirts that the students of Wake Forest wear to games? Embarrassing.

2. Men’s Ice Hockey vs. Boston University
We have heard the jokes already. BU players are just BC rejects. Jack Parker is a crotchety old man who pales in comparison our coaching legend Jerry York. The students of BU are Euro-trash. I could go on for lines upon lines but I will get to the point. BU vs. BC hockey is fun to watch. This game is one that can’t be missed.

1. Men’s Basketball vs. Duke
This game single handedly caused students to mutiny over basketball season tickets. This game single handedly has students excited about the basketball season in November. Tickets for this game have been going for upwards of $500 on eBay. Are people going wild for no reason? Of course not. This is sure to be a great game, matching up the top two preseason ACC picks. Boston College shot blocking maven Sean Williams should be back. Craig Smith and Jared Dudley should be running on all cylinders. Freshmen sensation Tyrese Rice should hopefully have learned not to throw up threes from eight feet from beyond the arc by now. BC will be in fighting shape and hopefully so will the Blue Devils. My only hope is that Craig doesn’t get hungry during the game and eat Duke point guard Greg Paulus. And by the way, Josh McRoberts looks like a tool.

This concludes the top ten games to see at Chestnut Hill this winter. Make sure to make it out to the games, be loud and support the Eagles.

10. Women’s Hockey vs. New Hampshire
BC has long been known to criticize the horrendous education, inferior athletics and backwoods stigma that surrounds the University of New Hampshire. However, one thing they can actually do up in the Great White North is play hockey. The women’s team is currently ranked 5th in the country and has split against BC so far this year. It should be a great matchup. The one problem that keeps it at #10 is that it is still a women’s ice hockey game.

9. Women’s Basketball vs. Stanford
Stanford is a power in women’s basketball year in and year out. They began the season ranked in the top 10. They will be come into Conte Forum with that Pac-10 swagger and hopefully leave with an “L” courtesy of the Eagles.

8. Women’s Basketball vs. Ohio State
That’s right. We have another women’s basketball game on the top 10 list. Before the uproar begins, listen up about Ohio State. The university that is known as the corrupt football factory of the Midwest can play basketball. Led by forward Jessica Davenport, the Buckeyes are a force in the Big Ten and deserve their top 10 accolades.

7. Men’s Hockey vs. New Hampshire
Playing UNH in hockey is a battle every year. We already went over how BC amuses itself by noting the shortcomings of New Hampshire but on the ice they are almost treated as equals. Granted BC already took out the Wildcats on their own ice earlier in the year but this will be fun to watch. It is the last weekend of the year and the Hockey East crown could be on the line.

6. Men’s Basketball vs. NC State
The Wolfpack lost their spindly star Julius Hodge to graduation but come to Chestnut Hill with a reloaded team. Led by Engin Astur and Ilian Evtimov, NC State and their foreign duo look to cause problems for the Eagles in their inaugural ACC men’s hoops game. BC fans may remember NC State guard Tony Bethel who previously played for Georgetown. He also knew better like BC and got out of the Big East when he could.

Watch for the next installment which will reveal the top 5 games to be played in Chestnut Hill.

The start of another season for the Boston College men’s hockey team means many things, one being a new freshmen class. With the mass exodus of seniors graduating and the leap to the NHL for Patrick Eaves, there are voids to be filled. Four players that can do just that are forwards Brock Bradford and Nathan Gerbe and defensemen Brett Motherwell and Tim Kunes.

Nathan Gerbe is one of ten freshmen looking to make an impact.

Bradford comes to BC after a highly prolific career with the Omaha Lancers of the USHL. The British Columbia native notched 57 points last year and hopes to carry that same offensive firepower over into this year. Bradford has also represented Canada in numerous international competitions, including 2004 Under 18 team that also included BC sophomore Dan Bertram.

Gerbe takes the ice for the Eagles after two years in the US National Development Program in Michigan. Known for his tenacious and gritty style of play, the 5'5" Gerbe will also try to replace some of the offense lost in the off season. Nathan also has international experience as he played on the Under 18 team that won the silver medal in the 2004 world championships.

Brett Motherwell will look to be a key member of the back line that hopes to protect Cory Schneider this year. Last year he was named USHL’s Defenseman of the Year for his play with the Omaha Lancers. In addition he was also named to the All-USHL first team. Motherwell has also held spots on many US teams that competed internationally.

Kunes laces up for Boston College after two seasons with the New England Junior Falcons of the EJHL. The New York native captured Rookie of the Year honors two seasons ago and All-EJHL honors this past season. Like the previous players, Tim also has had numerous international experience.

These four players are only a few of the freshmen looking to make an impact. The class in total numbered ten players. Each will be fighting for time along with an already talented Boston College team.

With the hard-nosed play of backup quarterback Matt Ryan leading the way, BC was able to fend of the Tigers and their rowdy as ever fans. Two way star Brian Toal plunged in from a yard out for the winning touchdown. This was BC's first football ACC victory and keeps them near the top of the Atlantic division standings.
We are in the midst of a new September here at Boston College. With the start of the new college year begins the entrance into a new “home” for most of the athletic teams. The headliner, BC Football, brought tons of media coverage to Chestnut Hill that hadn’t previously been experienced by the players or the students.
Starting early Friday morning, BC welcomed ESPN to the campus. A stage was set up in the campus green, affectionately known as the Dustbowl, and hundreds of BC students disregarded sleep to wake up early and see a national broadcast of Cold Pizza. One sign yielded by a student read, “Dear Mom, I missed class this morning so that I could be on Cold Pizza. I hope you understand.” With the excitement of a nationally televised show being taped right on campus grounds, many students decided to pass on class, while others watched in between.
The stage would see yet another student crowd the next morning. At 10:30 began College Gameday, but the festivities started much earlier. Students arrived as early as 5 in the morning to be in the front row. Gold Superfan shirts, maroon and gold faces, signs, banners, even cardboard cut-outs came out for the show. BC fans were also accompanied by some rivals Seminoles fans, and students from other nearby schools.
All of the excitement before the game only heightened as it came closer. The Mods, the BC senior living residences comparable to mini houses, were the hot spot for tailgating. Starting early in the afternoon, seniors grilled up burgers and dogs out in their yards while enjoying their favorite beverages.
With the game approaching, my friends and I decided to head into Alumni Stadium a little more than an hour before kickoff to find some good seats. Those entering the game early were given some other free promotional items, including rally towels, posters, free hot dogs, and a lanyard with a protective cover for the inaugural ACC game ticket. Coming in at the time we did, the latter was my only prize. By kickoff, the stadium was packed. The student section (usually not completely filled until one quarter into the game) was at full capacity. The students really came out to show their school spirit and cheer on the Eagles in their first game as a part of the ACC. Eeven Lee Corso commented on the nosie and spirit of the Eagle faithful.
The game didn’t go in our favor, with FSU getting the victory, but the student support was there until the end. The sections stayed full until the very end of the game, with many staying after for the alma mater. Overall, the game was a complete success. Even though BC didn’t come out with a win, the ACC saw that we were here to stay, and the BC fans are going to help push their team up to the top.
