Teams of the Week, May 14th to May 20th

Here we go, before the conference tournaments get underway, let's take one last look at the weekly Team of the Week honors that CSTV allows me to reward. All of these teams have more important post-season games coming up soon, but for now, they scored major points here as Regional Teams of the Week.

Here's the weekly honor roll, going from right to left on your geographic screen.

Teams of the Week, May 7th to May 13th

As I write this, I'm watching the movie "Riding Giants." This is the most incredible, awe-inspiring surf film I have ever seen (Have you seen it Coach Hill?). From the story of the first native Hawaiian surfer in the days of King Kamehameha to the closing chords of The Waterboys' "This is the Sea" which howls during the scrolling credits, it's an incredible rush of adrenaline and homage to the power of the ocean and those crazed fools that dare ride these monsters.

Just like these monstrosities, the following college baseball teams are the ones who had the most incredible seven days of anyone in Division I. In honor of the sport of surfing, we'll go from the West coast to the East this time on our roll of honor.

Teams of the Week, April 30th to May 6th

One down. Three to go. No quarter given. None asked.

That's May for you. The cruelest month of the college baseball season only has three weekends remaining. Not only does this month weed out all the pretenders, but it also happens to be the month that most of these student-athletes have their minds on so many things at once.

Baseball. Practice. Games. Upcoming draft. Studying. Exams. Living arrangements. Coeds. I don't blame them for losing focus from time to time. But let's give props to the teams that kept their noses to the grindstone this past week. Here are this week's honorees for Teams of the Week.

Teams of the Week, April 23rd to 29th

Okay stitch-heads, before we get to our weekly honors, here are some of the teams that got close, but no cigar, as far as consideration for the Teams of the Week roll call. So you fans of these teams, don't be mad. Here they are:

Teams of the Week, April 16th to April 22nd

Fellow stitch-heads, let me start by saying this.

I mean it when I say that this was a tough week to figure out the best of the four regions. Just too many teams had great weeks. I mean, how could I diss performances from teams like Creighton (4-0), Lafayette (6-1), Boston College (4-0), New Orleans (3-1), Cal (3-1), Coastal Carolina (3-1), San Diego (3-1) or Central Michigan (4-0)? These teams played great this week.

It ain't easy people. So don't get hacked off if your favorite team isn't listed here. Mea culpa in advance.

Teams of the Week, April 9th to April 15th

This was an interesting freakin' week in college baseball. The career saves record being captured by UC Irvine's Blair Erickson. Michigan whipping their rivals so bad even Bo was smiling up there. Arkansas going all manic on Florida. UCLA making their most famous alum, Jackie Robinson, as proud as blue and gold could get by sweeping USC on a weekend that all levels of baseball paid homage to the man.

It's a good time to be a college baseball fan, I tells ya'.

Teams of the Week, April 2nd-to-April 9th.

Lent, Good Friday, Passover, Easter, the Final Four, the Frozen Four, Daylight Savings Time, a serious ratings drop to American Idol, they're all behind us now. So we can all just concentrate on the stitched-ball now, right? Ab-so-freakin-lutely! It's about time that baseball steps up to the main stage.

With that as a back-drop, here are the best of the best from the week of April 2nd to 9th in the college baseball landscape. Let's go to our usual East to West format. Enjoy.

Teams of the Week, March 26-April 1

Interesting weekend on the diamond, including upset Saturday that saw many of the Top 10 teams take it on the chin. Sorry this will be a tad more brief than most Teams of the Week write-ups, I've been dealing with a time crunch that seems to have taken over my life since the beginning of the weekend.

So here's the Reader's Digest version of the weekly honorees, starting with Arizona's amazing sweep of the defending national champions. Going from left-to-right geographically, here are the best of the best this week.

Teams of the Week, March 19-25

To say that a few of this week's honorees are anything but household names in the college baseball landscape is the understatement of the century... well, okay, of the year.

Institutions like St. Peter's, Maryland and Washington don't exactly roll off the tongue when mentioning Division I stalwart stitched ball programs. But this week, they are the few, the proud, the brave of the baseball world as they were the most impressive of all the 290+ teams out there. They are joined by bounce-back teams like Florida, College of Charleston and Oklahoma.

Teams of the Week, March 12-18

There are too many good teams in the South to overlook here. Please bear with me on this one.

'Coz I know, I know. The first thing you're going to say is that I didn't include anything about the scintillating Vanderbilt-Ole Miss series in my Teams of the Week feature. And it's true, VU deserves some mention for pulling out two wins in one of the most exciting series of the whole season. That Friday night showdown with David Price going up against Will Kline is the stuff of legends, man. It just is.

But it's the road warriors fault.

Teams of the Week, March 5-12

This was the last weekend of full-fledged non-conference play. Well, for the most part, that is. Power conferences like the SEC and the Big 12 join the ACC and dig into full-time conference play this coming weekend. So we'll turn the page on that facet of the 2007 season.

To be honest, we just haven't had enough good non-conference three-gamers here in college baseball-land so far. And I guess we won't. But the closest we came was this past weekend. As a fan, I couldn't be happier. This week ruled.

Teams of the Week, Feb. 26-Mar.4

Maybe the season shouldn't start until March.

No really. Think about it.

February saw most Top 25 teams just line up tin can after tin can and pile up Ws quicker than a WalMart greeter racks up hellos (and lack-of-dignity points). Okay, so there was an occasional upset to these big shots, that's true. But that still doesn't mean I want to look at the upcoming weekend schedule and see Big Money U. take on the Sacrificial University Lambs time and again. As Wayne Graham told me a few weeks ago, "That's boring!"

Teams of the Week, Feb. 26

Sigh. Once again, it was slim pickin's for Team of the Week honors, particularly in the East, where no one really shined huge, and in the South, where all the big money boys either played Carnation-Instant-Ws or lost ignominiously to said teams of that ilk.

But let's give a hearty round of hip-hop-hoorays to the Midwest boys. Many of them took to the road to avoid the steady stream of blizzards in this unusually bitter February and came away with impressive wins. Guess they just had a lot of pent-up anger they needed to take out on someone.

Because of the success of teams like Miami University, Kent State and Wright State, teams like Wichita State, Michigan and Nebraska, who might garner more accolades, had to take a back seat in the Team of the Week honors.

Teams of the Week, the Britney Spears meets the shears version

Pepperdine gets the West Team of the Week honors.

Sorry about getting this Team of the Week honors posted so late. I got busy on some other stuff on this President's Day and am just now finishing this up.

None-the-less, although it wasn't the most exciting weekend of the season, there was a lot of action worth paying attention to, particularly in the Sunshine State and the goings-on of the west coast teams.

Teams of the Week

Although roughly half of the teams in Division I have yet to play - or, if you're Niagara, Buffalo, St. Bonaventure or anywhere near the town of Mexico, New York, you haven't even practiced - we're still going ahead with our first Teams of the Week honors for the 2007 season.

As will be the modus operandi all season long, we'll split the country up into four sections, based on conference location, and give props to those who are worthy.

So here's what we've got this week, going East to West:
