Crazy Finish

TAMPA - With time running out on the first half, Candace Parker stole a pass, ran to the corner and put up a shot with the buzzer sounding.

The shot never made it to the rim, but you could hear the whistle for the foul in between the buzzer. Parker was fouled by Amanda Thompson shooting a three pointer, and for her effort, received three free throw attempts, hitting two, to give the Lady Vols a 32-29 halftime lead.

As the half was coming to an end a lot of exciting things took place. First OU's miniature guard Jenna Plumley nailed a three, turned to her bench, who erupted as Plumley slapped her chest in exhuberance.

But Tennessee answered with their own midget as Shannon Bobbitt came right back and hit a huge three at the other end.

This has been a very sloppily played game so far, but to me, the Lady Vols are just the better team. With Courtney Paris sitting on the bench with three fouls, the Vols were able to ease their way back into the game and take a lead into the half.

Tennessee does need to find some production outside of Candace Parker, who has 16 points for Tennessee at the half.

For Oklahoma, they need to find some answer for Parker, and they must also hope that nobody on Tennessee erupts in the second half. They just can't compete if someone other than Parker steps up.

Look for Alexis Hornbuckle to somehow get back into the game. Hornbuckle went out early with two fouls and just didn't look like herself throughout the half. In fact, neither did Nicky Anosike.

I wouldn't call the Lady Vols effort in the first half spectacular by any means. If anything, the Sooners looked like they played the more solid half. The quality of athletes for the Lady Vols is simply a little bit better.

I was very impressed with Oklahoma's Amanda Thompson in the first half. Also, Jenna Plumley will be a spark plug. But you cannot have three freshman, a sophomore who played sparingly last year and a junior Paris - not even the good one - in the game at the same time against the No. 1 team in the country and expect to win.

It's just not going to happen.
