Huskies ready for Cavaliers

HARTFORD, Conn. -- No. 2 UConn (6-0) takes on Virginia (6-3) tonight at 7 p.m. at the Hartford Civic Center.

Within a game that shouldn't be rather competitive, the match-up with Virginia could prove to be one for the record books, as Huskies guard Mel Thomas can make history tonight.

With five points tonight, Huskies guard Mel Thomas could join the 1,000 points club -- only the 29th player in school history. Thomas comes into the game with 995 points in 106 games.

If the game tonight is similar to the last meeting between the Huskies and Cavaliers -- a 96-60 UConn win Dec. 18 last season -- Thomas should have no trouble surpassing the milestone.

Another storyline is the link of Huskies head coach Geno Auriemma to Virginia basketball. Auriemma's first job came as an assistant coach of the Cavaliers from 1982-85.

Virginia comes into the game after winning their last two against Wisconsin and Farleigh Dickinson Nov. 30 and Dec. 2, respectively.

Leading the Cavaliers is forward Lyndra Littles and guard Monica Wright, each scoring 17 points per game. Down under the basket, rebound threat Aisha Mohammed, from Lagos, Nigeria, leads the team with 9.1 rebounds per game.

The Huskies are led by center Tina Charles, whose 13.5 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game are tops on the team.
