The half in a nutshell

DURHAM, N.C. -- All you needed to do was watch the final 10 seconds of the first half to get a sense of how things went in the first 20 minutes. Rutgers rushed the ball up the court for a final shot but threw a sloppy pass that got intercepted by Brittany Mitch in the open court. Mitch broke free up the court but never paid heed to the clock and was still dribbling toward the basket when the buzzer sounded.

Rutgers leads 19-17 at the half and the action was every bit as ugly as the score indicates. If the Blue Devils could only hit a layup they'd probably be up by 10. Then again, if Rutgers could string together three passes without a turnover the second half would probably be a formality at this point.

The first half box score is in and it isn't pretty as there were more turnovers than made field goals, and by a healthy margin. Rutgers show 24.1 percent from the field and was just 1-of-8 from beyond the arc. Epiphanny Price contributed seven points but also committed four of Rutgers' nine turnovers.

Duke actually shot slightly better at 27. 6 percent (8-29 versus 7-29 for Rutgers) and missed all six of its three-point attempts. The Blue Devils compounded their poor shooting with 12 turnovers. But at least they were equal opportunity offenders -- seven of the nine Duke players to see action committed at least one turnover.

The Bouncing Bulldogs, a local jumproping team is on during halftime and has generated the most excitement so far tonight, and certainly the most oohs and ahs. If the second half continues on the same pace as the first, the Crazies might be chanting for the Bulldogs to come out for an encore instead.
