UNC goes for revenge against Lady Vols

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-No. 4 North Carllina will be looking to avenge a Final Four loss last season as they travel to Knoxville to face No. 1 Tennessee. The Tar Heels won the regular season matchup between the two teams 70-57, but couldn't hold on to a big lead in the national semifinal game as they fell 56-50.

The Tar Heels held a 48-36 lead with under nine minutes remaining, but were held to two points on their last 15 possessions as UT used the comeback to get the win on their way to their seventh national championship game.

The Tar Heels have started out 7-0 on the year and have only one win by less than 15 points on the year. Tennessee has started out 5-0 and has already beaten three nationally ranked teams.

UNC has replaced former All-American point guard Ivory Latta's production so far this season. Senior forward Erlana Larkins and guard Rashanda McCants have led a UNC offense that has scored 90-plus points in every game but one this season.

Larkins will be defended by a group of UT post players including All-American Candace Parker, who is averaging 22 points and 9 rebounds a game this year.

Both team start a true-freshman. UT's Angie Bjorklund has helped give the Lady Vols a threat from 3-point range, she is avearging 1.8 threes a game. UNC's Cetera DeGraffenreid is the second leading scorer on the Tar Heels team with 12.7 a game.

Tonight's game brings together two of the three winningest coaches in women's basketball history, Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt and UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell. The two are close friends because Hatchell got her master's degree from Tennessee and coached the junior varsity women's team.

The Tennessee students have come out in large numbers for tonight's nationally telivised game. Classes may be ending Tuesday, but hundreds have found time out of their schedule to make it down to Thompson-Boling arena. Expect the 7 p.m. tipoff to be close to a sellout in the 21,000 seat arena.
