Bagels and Baskets

MEMPHIS - Good morning and welcome to the Memphis Hilton for's day-long coverage of Media Day 2006.

The steam is still pouring off our first cup of tea (coffee is our enemy these days) and we just wanted to start the day off with a look at the league's pre-season picks as chosen by C-USA coaches.

The pre-season Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference look like this:

Morris Almond, Rice, G, 6-6, Sr., Powder Springs, Ga.

Oliver Lafayette, Houston, G, 6-3, Sr., Baton Rouge, La.
Lanny Smith, Houston, G, 6-2, Sr., Missouri City, Texas
Chris Douglas-Roberts, Memphis, G, 6-5, So. Detroit, Mich.
Joey Dorsey, Memphis, F, 6-9, Jr., Baltimore, Md.
Morris Almond, Rice, G, 6-6, Sr., Powder Springs, Ga.

. . . Almond's pick as the unanimous preseason POY might raise some eyebrows especially here in Memphis, but if we know anything about this league, we know that John Calipari will use the Almond pick as motivation for his Top 2 players (Douglas-Roberts and Dorsey). Almond is more than deserving of the honor and it will surely help to raise his national profile after last season's 21.9 ppg, 6.8 rpg performance, which included a 25.1 ppg average in C-USA games.

. . .For the record, Hang Time is thinking that Dorsey will ultimately be the league's POY and the Top Five teams by record will be: Memphis, Houston, Rice, UAB and UTEP.

. . .Hang Time's official base of operations for the morning is inside our luxurious accomodations inside what Calipari calls "the round hotel" (it's a tall spheroid and Calipari likes to keep building IDs as simple as possible). Outside our picture window is a man-made pond with a lovely gazebo. Gentle rain is causing ripples on the water and a white swan is pond-side staring into the Hang Time headquarters. We're contemplating feeding the little dude some bagel crumbs and getting its opinions on the C-USA season.

. . .Keep the questions for Media Day coming at cstvhangtimeAT and we'll get back with you soon.
