Big XII: Coach Sutton (the new version)

By Jean Neuberger - October 19, 2006

This year, as in many years past, Coach Sutton took to the podium to represent Oklahoma State. However, this year, instead of the legendary Eddie Sutton, it was his son, Sean, who has now grabbed the reins of the Cowboy program.

"Last season was a tough one for our basketball team and our players," said Sutton. "I'm proud of them for keeping their focus on basketball. However, last year's team had chemisty problems. I like the attitude of this basketball team this year. They are committed to each other, and committed to this basketball team."

The mission for Oklahoma State reflects the philosophy of their former coach.

"Play hard, play as a team," Sutton said. "That is what is always synoymous of a team that plays for Oklahoma State. We need to get back to what Oklahoma State basketball is known for."

Sutton has three pressing issues for this team.

"The first issue is to take care of the ball," said Sutton. "We averaged 18 turnovers a game last year. That's ridiculous. We need to cut that down to about 12. We need to rebound better, and our defense MUST get back to what Oklahoma State teams are used to playing."

Sutton said the Cowboy teams will be similar to the teams under his father, except for maybe one thing.

"I think we'll be a little faster," he said. "Dad's teams usually weren't very fast, but that's the style of the league nowadays."

Sutton wants desperately to do the one thing his father never did: win a national championship.

"I want, more than anything, to bring a national title to Gallagher-Iba Arena," he said. "We have two in there right now. I want to bring that third trophy home for Oklahoma State."

With Mario Boggan and JamesOn Curry, the chances could start immediately for the Cowboys.

"The conference is deep," said Sutton. "Someone asked me if the Big XII needed to win a championship in basketball soon. Well, we're getting really close. It's going to happen very soon. Hopefully, it could be us."
