C-USA: Roaming the Hilton

By David Scott - October 19, 2006

MEMPHIS - Set up for C-USA Media Day is underway as the Hilton's "Salon A" is festooned with member banners and interview tables set up throughout the ballroom.

Players scheduled to be in attendance along with the league's 12 head coaches are: Houston's Dion Dowell, Marshall's Tre Whitted, Rice's Morris Almond, Tulane's Chris Moore, Tulsa's Charles Ramsdell, UCF's Josh Peppers and the host city foursome of Antonio Anderson, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Joey Dorsey and Robert Dozier.

* Hang Time caught up with first-year SMU coach, Matt Doherty, at the Hilton's Rook Corner restaurant. Doherty was working the phone, taking notes and generally looking as dapper as ever. Asked how things are going early on, Doherty said: "Dallas is great and we're going to get it done."

Needing to attend to our omelette, we left the conversation at that and vowed to get more from the coach during the interview sessions.

* Sharing convention space with C-USA is the URJ. An upstart basketball league, you think? Nope. The Union for Reform Judaism. We're working on procuring that organization's pre-season All-Conference team. Check back later.

* The league is handing out a handy reference card specifiying the rules of usage for Conference USA and member institutions. Some of the important clarifications: ALWAYS use the hyphen in C-USA; never use Southern Methodist (always SMU); use UTEP and not Texas-El Paso; and Southern Miss is proper while So. Miss. and So. Mississippi are not.

* We're going into pre-game mode with some stretching, game-planning and a walk through scheduled for the next hour or so. Our next posting will come from the Salon A media workroom - the energy will be palpable through your computer screen.

Hang loose. . .
