Let's Do Lunch

By - October 12, 2006

About 150 press members, conference administrators, school officials and alumni attended a two-hour press luncheon that was not without its highlights.

  • And Now For Something Completely Different: Each place setting featured purple napkins with the itinerary for the lunch printed on one side.

  • Former NBA player Kenny Smith emceed the event. Said the Inside the NBA studio host in his introduction: "I look at the collection of college coaches before us, and I would say there is not a college conference anywhere that has the same knowledge and same character in the coaches that we have here."

  • After Novelle Dickinson, the league's Faculty Athletics Representative spoke about the strengths of the MEAC, Smith quipped: "I will agree with Mr. Dickinson that this is a great conference but I also will say it's a tough conference -- because I understand you can win the conference tournament and still get fired" -- a remark met with both hearty and semi-uneasy laughs from the coaches and audience. (Last season, sixth-seeded Hampton upset Delaware State in the MEAC title game to advance to the NCAAs but coach Bobby Collins was canned in the offseason.)

  • All this transpired as Meackie, one of the most bizarre-looking mascots in the history of sports, wandered around the room doing a whole lot of nothing.

  • Both reigning coaches of the year -- Delaware State men's coach Greg Jackson and Coppin State women's coach Derek Brown -- had opportunities to address the crowd.
