MVC: Newsy Notes

By - October 30, 2006

Some more newsy notes from the MVC event in St. Louis:

  • The MVC, which is celebrating its centennial during the 2006-07 season, is the nation's second-oldest conference after the Big Ten.

  • Twenty-eight different schools have claimed Valley membership over the league's 99-year history. Among them are Tulsa (1934-1996), Grinnell (1918-1939), Kansas (1907-1928), Nebraska (1907-1919; 1920-1928), Cincinnati (1957-1970), Louisville (1964-1975), Houston (1950-1960) and Memphis (1967-1973).

  • Last season, the Valley was 12-12 against the power conferences, including a pair of Top 25 victories over Big Ten teams, Wichita State's one-point loss to nationally ranked Illinois and Drake's three-point loss to nationally ranked Boston College.

  • The MVC finished No. 6 in the Collegiate Basketball News RPI ranking -- its best-ever finish (No. 8 in 1999 and 2005 was its previous high). Six schools finished in the Top 45: Wichita State (19), Missouri State (22), Bradley (25), UNI (35), Southern Illinois (37) and Creighton (45).

  • Three different Valley teams -- Bradley, UNI and Wichita State -- spent time in the Top 25 last season. The last time the league had three different schools represented in the AP Top 25 in the same year was during the 1982-83 season when Illinois State, Tulsa and Wichita State each cracked the table.

  • Including last season, the league has had a minimum of two 20-win teams in each of the past eight seasons. In 2005-06, the league had six 20-win teams for the first time in its 99-year history. The previous mark (4) had been achieved on four occasions (1994-95, 1999-00, 2003-04 and 2004-05).
