MWC: UNLV Practice

By David Scott - October 25, 2006

LAS VEGAS – With a few turns of the Hang Time Dodge Neon we easily arrived at Tarkanian Way on the UNLV campus and meandered into the Thomas & Mack/COX Pavilion parking lot.

We’re now live in the bowels of COX in the Runnin’ Rebels basement practice facility where Lon Kruger’s team is scrimmaging itself (Reds vs. Grays) with four referees (three at a time) calling fouls and giving a game feel and tempo to the proceedings.

The teams are subbing frequently in the five minute periods. Kruger is coaching the red team (with senior Arizona State transfer, and Lon’s kid, Kevin Kruger at the point) and assistant Lew Hill has the gray side (with Las Vegas-native, freshman point guard Marcus Lawrence running things).

The Rebels, as you’d expect are pressing full court after made hoops and the home Grays won the first five minute period 10-3. The Reds cam back to win the second five-minute period.

Credit Wendell White with an early monster dunk and the impressive frosh, Lawrence, with a big time defensive play taking a charge in the lane. Sophomore Rene Rougeau has a few hard fought, rebound baskets underneath for the Reds and Michael Umeh doesn't apeear to be showing any adverse affects from the knee surgery that ended his 2005-06 season after 16 games.

* No sign yet of Coach Jerry Tarkanian who told us he would be at practice today, following his taping of a local commercial. Damn actors - can never rely on them.
