Sun Belt: Hilltoppers enjoying view at the peak

By Jean Neuberger - October 24, 2006

It's not a rarity for Western Kentucky to be at the top of the preseason polls. After all, WKU is a dominant program with a great tradition. And this year, the Hilltoppers look to continue their success, thanks in part to All-Conference Preseason Player of the Year, Courtney Lee.

"The two best things about Courtney are that he performs every night; you never look in the stats and see a bad night from him, and that he impacts every facet of the game," said WKU head coach Darrin Horn. "He makes an invaluable difference to the team."

Horn is pumped about this year's team.

"We've got a lot of athleticism and depth," said Horn. "We'll be able to run up and down the floor. The best part is that we'll have multiple guys who have played multiple years. We'll need help from the new guys though. We have a tough schedule."

Western Kentucky faces non-conference opponents such as Vanderbilt, Georgia, and a home date with Southern Illinois.

"We're concerned about our interior play," said Horn. "But hopefully the guys will step up. We want to rebound better as a team as well."

Horn was also blessed about the huge fan base in Bowling Green, Ky. that supports his team.

"We've got great fans that make our place tough for opponents to win," Horn said. "We've only lost one Sun Belt game at home in two years. Our support and tradition definitely helps our team."
