Tobacco Road Two-Step

After spending the afternoon in Winston-Salem at Wake Forest's team media day, your faithful narrator high-tailed it down Interstate 40 to Chapel Hill for Late Night with Roy Williams, North Carolina's version of Midnight Madness.

Ninety-percent of the schools in college basketball would kill to draw this many fans (upwards of 20,000) for a home game. Any home game. In the bowels of the Dean Dome, I find myself in a tunnel behind the Carolina players dressed in blue jeans and warm-up jackets as alum Stuart Scott introduces them one by one. The atmosphere in the dark gymnasium is more Phish concert than sporting event -- smoke machines, dark-blue rolling lights and glowsticks strewn throughout the crowd.

As I retreat to set up camp in the media room, sophomore swingman Marcus Ginyard is dressing in a purple wig and bright gold jacket for a skit with some of the freshmen -- a get-up that looks like it was pulled from the wardrobe of True Hollywood Stories with Charlie Murphy. He just caught me staring. ("You didn't see this," said the Virginia native.)

More to come from Chapel Hill.
