Torrell's Torment

By - October 11, 2006

Last year, Winthrop came this close to topping second-seeded Tennessee in the first round of the NCAAs. Not until Chris Lofton canned a fadeaway 18-footer from the baseline in the game's waning seconds did the Vols escape with a 63-61 victory over the upstart Eagles.

Winthrop would have been just the fifth No. 15 seed to top a No. 2 seed in the NCAAs, joining Richmond (1991), Santa Clara (1993), Coppin State (1997) and Hampton (2001).

For Torrell Martin, who finished with 14 points and a career-best 13 rebounds in the losing effort, the pain was extra-agonizing: Lofton's semi-miracle came over Martin's outstretched right arm.

"I just felt destroyed. I don't really have a word to explain it," Martin said. "I just knew I was going to play the best defense possible -- and usually that's going to get you somewhere. Obviously that time it didn't."
