Forty Minutes From Tip

By David Scott - November 28, 2006

KINGSTON, R.I. - We're about 40 minutes from tip at the Ryan Center and both teams are shooting around and stretching on the floor in front of the Hang Time perch.

URI holds a 7-3 lead in the all-time series with Iona, dating back to 1991-92. The Gaels won the last meeting, 77-67 on Dec. 27, 2004. Jim Baron is 3-2 all-time vs. Iona.

Iona is 15-19 all-time against current A-10 schools.

. . . Tonight's officials are Gene Steratore, Gary Parger and Jim Haney.

. . . Rhody's Kahiem Seawright is averaging 10.7 rebounds per game, ranking him 17th nationally. He had 19 boards against Houston, the last time Hang Time was in the Ryan Center for that pulsating, overtime thirller, lost by the Rams, 102-99.

. . . URI's Jimmy Baron was named to the A-10's honor roll on Nov. 26 after a week in which he scored 25 points (vs. Centenary) and 12 (at Boston College).

. . . We made it in time for our customary peek at the Ramette dancers' pre-game rehearsal. We're big Ramettes fans - always have been.

. . . St. John's transfer, Dexter Gray, will be eligible for the Gaels on Dec. 19. The 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward will be a junior and should add some veteran leadership for the Gaels.

. . .The Gaels were picked to finish fourth in the MAAC; the Rams were picked 11th in the A-10.

. . . Iona AD Pat Lyons was greeted by interim URI AD Greg Burke (and Dick Vitale's pick for the permanent position). The two joked that this is the Mike Laprey Game. Laprey had been the SID at Iona up until last season and now holds the same position at URI.

. . . The sneaker battle pits two Nike schools against each other.
