UConn Extends Its Lead

By David Scott - November 19, 2006

HARTFORD - UConn has extended its hafltime lead by a point to 53-36 with 11:34 left in the game. Ole Miss needs to be given credit for A) keeping things from getting out of hand and B) firing away on the three-pointers.

. . .ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla is in the house taking in the action. Count Franny as one of the non-believers in UConn - so far. He reserved the right to change his mind as the young Huskies mature.

. . . Thabeet’s nine blocks on Saturday night were one short of the UConn record held by Emeka Okafor and Donyell Marshall.

. . .Ole Miss is without the services of junior center, Dwayne Curtis, a pre-season All-SEC pick, who fractured the third metatarsal in his left foot during the third day of practice. He’s currently in a walking boot and could return in late December if all goes well in his recovery.

. . .In a rarity for college hoops media guides, the lone picture on the Ole Miss guide’s cover is Andy Kennedy (in black and white) with a stern expression and the tag line: “NEW ERA, NEW REBEL, ANDY KENNEDY.”

. . . UConn continues its unprecedented string of 11 home games with a game in Gampel on the 26th against Albany, a pre-season favorite in America East. In the Calhoun Era, the most home games to start a season is four (five different times). After Albany, comes Sacred Heart, Texas Southern, Northeastern, St. Mary’s (Calif.), Pepperdine and Coppin State. The only real challenges out of conference come at LSU the first Saturday in January and at home for Indiana on January 20. Exactly what a young team needs - early wins and some time to prepare for the rigors of the Big East.
