Welcome to the Dunkin' Donuts Center

By David Scott - November 22, 2006

PROVIDENCE - We’re about an hour from tip between Boston College and Providence College and we’ve secured internet access over a network id’d as “P(rovidence) Bruins Locker Room.” We believe this means that we’re stealing signal from the Boston Bruins organization and it makes us quite happy to think that all these awful recent years of Beantown hockey are being avenged by me squatting on the Baby Bruins’ WiFi. (If we’re suddenly booted, we’ll know that the ghost of Bobby Orr is omnipresent.)

But we’re here at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center for college hoops and an important night for both the Friars and the Eagles, who enter with matching 1-1 records.

. . . PC assistant coach Steve DeMeo stopped by the Hang Time perch. “Anyone read that thing?” he asked.

“Does my mom count?”

DeMeo, whose name surfaced for a few head jobs over the past couple of seasons, said his guys appear to be ready and understand the task at hand. He also thinks the Brown loss might have woken up his guys a bit.

. . . PC leads the all-time series, in this the 101st meeting between the schools. The Friars hold a 55-45 lead, including 34-15 all-time at home against Boston College. The two teams first met on February 16, 1942 when the Friars earned a 64-37 win at the Rhode Island Coliseum. The former Big East rivals most recently met at here at The Dunk on Jan. 26, 2005 when BC won its third straight of the series, 78-75.

. . . BC enters as the No. 23-ranked team in the latest Associated Press Poll. PC is 90-198 all-time versus ranked squads and, all-time versus ACC teams, PC is 82-76. Tonight is the first of two scheduled ACC opponents for PC, with a December 29 trip to Florida State also on the slate.

. . . Probable starters for PC are: Sophomore guards, Sharaud Curry, Weyinmi Efejuku and Geoffrey McDermott; senior forward/center Herbert Hill and junior forward Charles Burch.

Probables for BC are: senior forward Jared Dudley, freshman forward Shamari Spears, junior center John Oates, sophomore guard Tyrese Rice and senior guard Sean Marshall. Tonight will also mark the return of oft-troubled, junior center Sean Williams who was suspended for the first two games of the season for the dreaded “violation of team rules.” A bid presence in the middle, especially on defense, Williams averaged 2.0 blocks per game last season (third among ACC players in ACC games).

. . . Tonight’s officials are Joe Lindsay, jamie Luckie and Mike Stuart.

. . . Once again, a reminder that the contest tips at 7:30 is available on CSTV.com’s fabulous Game Tracker (at the scoreboard page) or, if you are part of the COX cable system (Rhode Island, mostly). Red Sox play-by-play man, Don Orsillo does PBP for the COX games, along with color analyst Ron Perry.
