Garbage Time Ensues

AMHERST, Mass. - Well, so much for Cindex No. 10 UMass’s return to the national spotlight - at least for now. The Minutemen continue to trail 72-59 with just under four minutes remaining in the game and BC managed to expose the Minutemen a bit by slowing down the game and defending the 3-point shot.

UMass will still be fine in-conference, but this was the opportunity for a statement game against an ACC opponent and coach Travis Ford’s troops didn’t answer the bell. There’s no other way of stating it.

. . . Mr. Saturday, Sean Marshall, had his second straight spectacular Saturday performance. After equaling his career high with 23 points against URI on last Saturday, Marshall has poured in a team-high 19 points.

. . . Minuteman jumping bean, Stephane Lasme continues to impress, highlighted by a reverse baseline dunk at the 10:41 mark.

. . .The new slogan to appeal to the UMass alums is: You were, You are, UMass.

Quite inspiring, indeed. I just might give another $25 this year!

. . . It is officially a sell-out, this evening, the first time Mullins has been filled to the gills since 2001 against Temple, during the Bruiser Flint Era. That game was on ABC and resulted in an 84-52 loss.

. . . PA announcer George Miller got a little fired up when he had to make a second half, “Please don’t throw anything on the floor” announcement. George never did take the losses too well.

. . . Sam the Minuteman is getting some quality time with the dance team, even going as far as to hold hands with one of the dancers. We’re checking on the fraternizing rules between mascot and dancer.

. . . Louie no longer runs around Mullins with signs of encouragement - there is a mini-Louie, but his running petered out quickly.

. . . A steady stream of fans began exiting at about the 10:00 mark - many exhausted from a full day of UMass sports between football (a 2:30 kick-off) and hoops (7:30 tip).

. . . Keep in mind that Hang Time will again file a post-game columnette after locker room access and the press conferences. Be sure to check back later tonight or in the morning. Also, we’ll be catching these same Minutemen on Wednesday night at Boston University for another Hang Time live-blogging extravaganza. Tip is schedule for 8 p.m., and we’ll start blogging in the 6 o’clock hour.

. . .Hang Time had the opportunity to sit down with UMass grad and BC Coach, Al Skinner, just before the season started. Over the course of tonight’s game, we’ll drop in some “Al on. . . UMass” highlights of that conversation. Much of what Skinner talks about is especially relevant for tonight’s game, the first to honor Skinner’s former coach, Jack Leaman.

Al on. . . THE ‘Fro

HT: You had quiet the afro back in the day. Any chance of bring that back?

AS: If I could I would (LAUGHS). I wish I could grow it.
What it does for me is it gives me an opportunity to relate to my players. What they see when they see those old pictures, is things change.
