Live From the Don't Connect Users (DCU) Center

WORCESTER - Well, we've got some good news and some bad news for you:

Good News:
We are able to connect to a wireless network courtside from the DCU Center, but it's costing us 10 bucks for an hour of usage (of 50 for a full day's usage).

Bad News:
Since we can't imagine the CSTV.com bean counters are going to be very happy paying for something that just about every REAL arena in the country provides for free, we'll just be with you until our WiFi time expires, which should be at about 7:30 EST.

What we will do for you is still file an end-of-game columnette - but we'll have to do that latenight once we return to the land of affordable web access (aka Hang Time World Headquarters).

. . . Mason's game will be a homecoming of sorts for seniors Tim Burns and Makan Konate, as they played high school basketball at Worcester Academy. Head student manager Sean Passey also is from Worcester. Most prominent among those returning home is George Mason Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Tom O'Connor. The member of the NCAA Men's Basketball Committee went to college at Assumption and coached basketball at Clinton High School. Both are in Worcester.

. . . HC is without sophomore guard Pat Doherty for the second straight game (he had started three contests for the Crusaders this season). Doherty is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after breaking a bone in his right hand last week in practice, according to the outstanding Holy Cross SID, Charlie Bare.

In fact, it appears HC will only dress 10 players for tonight's game, as injuries have ravaged Ralph Willard's club.

. . . Holy Cross owns an all-time record of just 6-11 at its alternate home court, the DCU Center, but stands 3-1 under the direction of head coach Ralph Willard. Willard is is now in his eighth season as the Crusaders' head coach, and currently owns a mark of 140-84 during his time in Worcester.

. . . Holy Cross is presently ranked 40th in the nation in the latest Ratings Percentage Index, with a rating of .5970 through games of December 19. The Crusaders are currently the only team in the Patriot League ranked in the top 100, with the second-highest ranking belonging to Navy (116th, .5318).

. . . Okay, we can't let this go much further without mentioning what an absolute pit the DCU Center (nee Worcester Centrum) truly is. Now almost a quarter of a century old, the arena has seemingly always been a cold, drab facility run by incompetents. Even in the days when UMass (under John Calipari) would sell the joint out and get it rocking, it was still an awful facility to accomodate major college basketball.

The building plays home for the Worcester Sharks, an average AHL team, that we're guessing draws poorly. It's par for the course in this building.

Are we unnecessarily harsh just because the building isn't free-wifi accessible? Yes. But when you act bush league, you get treated bush league. Hang Time is on the side of truth, always.
