Official Word from the Official Scorer

By David Scott - December 02, 2006

AMHERST, Mass. - Hang Time was able to visit briefly with the Mullins Center official scorer, Howie Davis. (We actually had title of Official Scorer for several games in this building and often was forced to wear a sleeveless, ladies size medium, referee’s vest at the Scorer’s Table (for identification purposes, they say). We are still scarred from that experience, by the way, and have been considering suing the State of Massachusetts for un-due duress on formerly sane-minded individual.

Anyway, Davis, the former UMass Sports Information Director reports that this will be a great test for UMass to determine whether or not they are “ready for prime time.”

As Davis pointed out, the No. 10 Cindex, Minutemen have won all the games they were supposed to at this point (6-1), the only loss coming at then No. 4 Pittsburgh. For UMass to beat an ACC team, before a full house in a nationally-televised game would give UMass a big boost heading into a tough stretch that sees them play Louisville and Kentucky on the road.

. . . Tonight’s sneaker battle will waged between Reebok (BC) and Adidas (UMass).

. . . BC has attempted 20 or more free throws in four of five games this season - and has made 15 or more free throws in three games.

. . . Coach Ford, during his weekly TV show, said he was manily concerned with his team’s turnovers and free throw shooting.

With good reason, the Minutemen are averaging 19.5 turnovers per game (although they also cause 18.3 per game). Highly-touted Tiki Mayben leads the team with 27 turns (against 36 assists).

The Minutemen shoot .605 form the line as a team - Staphane Lasme really struggles, having hit only 19 of 36 free throws on the year (.528).

. . . Tonight’s game gives us an unusual college match-up of true shot-blockers. For UMass, Lasme averages under six a game (5.7) while BC’s man in the middle, Sean Williams averages 8.0. As a team through seven games, UMass has 57 blocks and BC through five games has 39. They are No. 4 and No. 5, respectively in team blocks in the nation. Both Lasme (3.9) and UMass (7.2) were third nationally last season in the category.
