(Plausibly) Live from Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. - Welcome to the DCU Center for tonight’s game between 6-4 Holy Cross (from the Patriot League) and 4-4 George Mason (Colonial Athletic Association).

(Full Disclosure: There’s a slight chance that the DCU is not wireless -equipped, so we’re doing an advance first-posting. At the very least, we hope to be able to file from the press room, but having done a few games at the old Centrum (since re-named), we’re not all that confident that live-blogging will be possible. We’ll let you know as soon as we can once we arrive in Worcester. Thanks for your patience.)

We have to say we’ve already seen higher profile games than this match-up this season - BC-Maryland and Providence-BC to name two - but we’re also confident that no game (until March) will be more anticipated by this Hang Time correspondent than HC-GM.

As a college basketball fan, you simply can not share the story of George Mason’s 2005-06 run with enough people on enough occasions. This writer has been covering all levels of college sports for close to 20 years and nothing comes near what Jim Larranaga pulled off last season in advancing to the Final Four. Nothing.

Already this season, the “George Mason Effect” has revealed itself early and often with teams like Butler and now, maybe even Drexel (also form the CAA), enjoying the rewards of trying to be the “Next Mason.”

We really thought the aftereffects would grate on our nerves, but we’re still not sick of the Patriots’ improbable run of last season. And we still can’t enough of the story-telling, like this grand effort from the Boston Globe’s Bob Ryan.

. . . Holy Cross (coming off a loss at Providence on Tuesday night) game notes can be found here and George Mason 4-4 (coming off a Tuesday night loss at Duke) http://gomason.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/gema-m-baskbl-sched.html> notes are here.

. . . The teams met last season in Fairfax on December 27 and George Mason dismantled the Crusaders, 71-38. That was the teams first and only meeting before tonight.

. . .Mason’s had an interesting start to its season, alternating wins with losses, starting with a season-opening win at Cleveland State.
