Three-Ball Keeps Peperdine in Game

By David Scott - December 20, 2006

HARTFORD - Pepperdine continues to throw the ball away with regularity, but is able to keep the UConn lead to under 10 through its extensive use of the three-poin shot. Still, with under 8:00 to play, the Huskies maintain a 30-21 lead.

. . . AJ Price continues to shine for UConn with five points and at least one astonishing dime. We’ll ignore - for now - the 3-point air ball he heaved with 9:04 left in the half.

. . .Pepperdine assistant coach Loren Lebeau (who was with Walberg at Fresno City College) is an absolute madman on the Waves’ bench. While Walberg stands and directs traffic, Lebeau sits, then stands, then sits, all the while barking out instructions.

. . .Another Pepperdine bench oddity: The team’s trainer Debbie Prouse sits at the head of the bench amongst the coaches. Most trainers are relegated to the end of the bench near the student managers. We like the exclusionary feel to Walberg’s staff.

. . . After a 3-pointer by mini-mite, 5-foot-7, Kingsley Costain for Pepperdine (cutting the lead to 16-11), UConn coach Jim Calhoun called a timeout and got right in the face of his freshman center Hasheem Thabeet for not defending the three. Thabeet was immediately benched.
