UMass Pride in BU Country

By David Scott - December 06, 2006

BOSTON - T's Pub is filling with a post-work crowd and the Umies are doing their best to take over the place.

Leading the UMass cheering group is the president of the Friends of UMass Football, Bill DeFlavio. DeFlavio, who played at UMass from 1968-72, is one of many alum who are finding the sudden resurgence of UMass sports to his liking.

"I know for football, we've got a great coach and a great athletic department and it's exciting to be aorund it right now," said DeFlavio. "It feels a lot like 1998 (UMass's first National Championship in football). There's that kind of excitement and Coach Brown was the defensive coordinator for that team.

. . . Hang Time sidled up next to a UMass brother/sister alumni team, Greg ('92) and Danielle Mogolesko ('95). Greg, like many of the UMass alums in T's currently was reliving some good memories from the days of the Curry Hicks Cage. "We'd sleep on benches to get tickets for those games," said Greg, who's no longer - for the record - sleeping on benches. "On of my buddies, Gabe Tucker, started the Minutemaniacs fan club when we were there."

From the looks of this bar, there will be more than a few ex-Minutemaniacs in the Agganis crowd tonight.

. . . Ex-Mullins Center favorite, walk-on Jason Germain, is in the house for this game. Germain works for the UMass Athletic Development office these days.

. . . All right, you UMass haters - we're heading back over to The Ag where we'll do our best to give equal time to the BU Terriers.
