Doin' at The Dunk

PROVIDENCE - Welcome to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center for tonight’s Big East opener for No. 15/21 Marquette (13-2, 0-0) and host, Providence (10-3, 0-0).’s Jeff Goodman is reporting that neither Marquette’s Jerel McNeal (injured while banging heads in practice) nor Providence’s Sharaud Curry (suspended for a violation of team rules) will play tonight. McNeal is his team’s second-leading scorer, while Curry is Providence’s leading point-getter (17.3 ppg, 5.5 apg)).

. . . It should be a pretty packed house as the Friars have gotten off to a nice start in the non-conference and with Marquette being a ranked opponent. Tonight’s game against 15th-ranked Marquette will be the Friars’ 291st game all-time versus a ranked team. PC is 91-199 alltime versus ranked squads, including a 1-1 mark this season. The Friars’ last win against a ranked opponent was a 73-64 victory over 23rd-ranked Boston College on this past Thanksgiving Eve. The win was the Friars’ first over a ranked team since February 7, 2004. In PC’s other game against a ranked team this season, the Friars were defeated at No. 7 Florida on December 6, 2006.

The Friars are 10-1 this season at home (the only loss was a shocker to Brown).

. . . Hang Time is jazzed about getting to see Dominic James in person for the first time this season. The sophomore’s outing against Duke earlier this season remains as one of the best all-around individual performances we’ve seen (on TV) thus far. James - especially in that game - showed glimpses of being more refined and impact (at this point in his career) than former Golden Eagle, Dwayne Wade was at the same time in his Golden Eagle days.

. . . For Providence, in place of Curry, freshman Dwain Williams has been getting the start in Providence’s prior two games. Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) started 23 of the team’s 27 games last season and led the team in assists (3.52 apg) and free throw percentage (89.1 percent). David Cubillan, a freshman guard, is the next leading minutes-getter for Marquette and we look for him to start in place of McNeal.

. . . It appears fellow sophomore guard Wesley Matthews, with whom McNeal banged heads during practice earlier this week, will play tonight. McNeal, it seems, didn’t even travel with the team.
