Price to Come off Bench

By David Scott - January 20, 2007

HARTFORD - If the pre-game stats monitor is to be believed, sophomore guard AJ Price will be replaced in UConn's starting line-up by freshman Doug Wiggins. Price, who has been a horrible shooting funk, will miss his first start this season, having been in the starting five for all 17 games this far. It means Jim Calhoun will start four freshmen.

UConn adds sophomore Jeff Adrien to the frosh, Jerome Dyson, Stanley Robinson and Hasheem Thabeet to its first five. Indiana will go with Armon Bassett, DJ White, Roderick Wilmont, Mike White and Earl Calloway.

. . . In our three visits to the HCC this season, this is by far the marquee game and as such, has the Civic Center a bit of a buzz with 10 minutes til tip.

We walked through a host of IU fans in the HCC lobby and there’s a good amount of maroon/red already scattered throughout the seats. We ran into at least two groups of intrepid IU fans who drove the 15 or so hours from Bloomington.

Game time temperature, outside the HCC was 25 degrees, in case you’re wondering and the IU fans were complaining.

. . . UConn is hoping to avoid consecutive losses at home for the first time since February 25 and March 1, 1997 (when they dropped contests to Pittsburgh and Seton Hall in Hartford). The Huskies are out of the AP Top 25 for the first time in four seasons. The Huskies had been in 67 straight polls, the second longest stretch in school history. The last poll without the Huskies came out March 9, 2003. UConn head coach Jim Calhoun is 10-7 all-time vs. the Big Ten, including a 3-1 mark against Indiana. Coach Calhoun and the Huskies are 1-3 against Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson, those results coming when Sampson was the head coach at Oklahoma.

. . . Several NBA teams have requested credentials for today’s game and there is a much denser press row than in recent HCC games. Sitting alongside us at the Hang Time perch are the New York Post’s Lenn Robbins and the NY Daily News’s Roger Rubin, two of the all-time legends on the college hoops circuit.

. . . The bottom line for this one is UConn is young - the same theme that has run through the Huskies season. The probable starting line-up for Jim Calhoun includes four freshmen, one sophomore, while the Indiana five starters are comprised of two seniors, two juniors and a freshman.

. . . You can expect junior forward DJ White (13.9 ppg) and senior forward Roderick Wilmot (11.0 ppg) to lead the Hoosiers and the Huskies will look to its three scoring leaders of sophomore forward Jeff Adrien (13.0) and guards Jerome Dyson (12.4) and the slumping AJ Price (11.2).
