Shooting and Stretching

PROVIDENCE - We’re about 45 minutes from tip and both teams have been shooting around and stretching on The Dunk’s court - which this weekend will be dedicated to honor Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt.

Marquette is in its road blue uniforms with blue shooting shirts, Providence is in the home whites with black sweats and white shooting jerseys.

. . . A smattering of Providence College students have filtered into the end zone seats behind the Hang Time perch. There is also a handful of Marquette faithful congregating at the end where the Golden Eagles are shooting.

. . .Providence game notes are found here; and Marquette notes are here.

. . . This is the seventh meeting between the two schools and the all-time series stands even at 3-3. In the last meeting between the two teams, Marquette defeated the Friars, 88-78, in Milwaukee on March 2, 2006. In the Friars’ most recent win, Providence defeated the Golden Eagles, 81-59, in the NCAA Tournament on March 14, 1997.

. . . Celtics GM Danny Ainge is on the sideline watching Marquette go through its shootaround. A heckler yelled out to Ainge, the former Celtic and Major League Baseball prospect, "You should have stayed with theBlue Jays." How cruel is that?

Dominic James, a potential lottery pcik if he were to forego his final two seasons at Marquette, went out of his way to go over and shake Ainge's hand. Smart move.

. . . One of the all-time great sports photographers, Bruce Schwartzman stopped by the Hang Time home base to relieve some old times. Schwartzman will be training his lens on Dominick James for a good portion of the game.

. . . In yet more sideline ogling, we’re expecting to see Marquette alum and author, Charles Pierce, in the house tonight. Pierce, whose latest book, Moving the Chains, is a must-read for any fan of the New England Patriots and/or Tom Brady. Pierce borders on the fanatical for Golden Eagle supporters, and would be offended that we even refer to his team as the Ges, instead of their rightful moniker of Warriors.
