Tip in Ten

By David Scott - January 03, 2007

BOSTON - We’d like to tell you Matthews Arena is starting to fill up, but with ten minutes until tip, there are still more Northeastern cheerleaders than fans. Not that we have any problem with a proliferation of cheerleaders.

In addition to students being on break, the Boston Celtics are home against LeBron James and the Cavaliers and BC is hosting Yale up the road in Chestnut Hill. Those are just two of the other basketball options in the area tonight.

. . . In other CAA news, with a rare noon-time, mid-week affair, Drexel moved to 2-0 in-league (10-2 overall) with a 61-55 win at Georgia State. It was the Dragons eighth straight win.

. . . ODU’s junior guard, Brian Henderson has had six double-doubles in his past seven games. He shoots 41.7 percent from 3-point land. As a team, the Monarchs shoot 37.7 percent from beyond the arc, second in the conference behind Hofstra’s 38.2 percent.

. . . Tonight’s sneaker war is a battle of two Nike schools.

. . . The game should be played somewhere in the mid 50s to low 60s with both teams holding opponents to 66 or fewer points per game. Northeastern has scored under 60 points in eight of 12 games thus far.

. . . 2005-06 CAA Player of the Year Jose Juan Barea of Northeastern is currently with the Dallas Mavericks. Northeastern’s second all-time leading scorer went undrafted and signed with the Mavericks after an impressive summer session. He is the first Husky player in the league since the late Reggie Lewis last played with the Celtics in 1993.

. . .Bill Coen is in his first season as a head coach, after spending the past nine seasons as an assistant and the associate head coach at Boston College under head coach Al Skinner. Monarchs head coach Blaine Taylor has a six year record at ODU of 100-62.
