Blue Devils Stretching it Out for HUGE One

By David Scott - February 14, 2007

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – We’re about 75 minutes from tip and both student end zone sections are approximately 75 percent filled. The students are mostly clad in gold t-shirts and a large number of yellow wigs are also being sported. From afar, they look like Donald Trump toups.

Duke is stretching on its end of the floor waering black warm-ups and blue road uniforms. BC’s Tyrese Rice has been out shooting for quite a while and has been joined by a smattering of other Eagle players. They are in home whites with Jared Dudley wearing a maroon shooting jersey, but most of the other players are in white shooting shirts.

. . . Speaking of Dudley,’s Jeff Goodman makes a compelling argument for Dudley being the national player of the year. While we’re not in the habit of steering you away from Hang Time or, we are confident enough in our ability that you’ll be coming back to us after you’re done reading Goodman’s column.

One thing that Goodman overlooks - and we agree, it shouldn’t have a bearing on such things of POY - is that BC has never been a school that self-promotes or one that promotes the individual over the team. It stems from Al Skinner’s personality, but the athletic department’s media relations staff is not the kind that pounds you over the head with Player Resumes or marketing campaigns.

Several of the other players in the discussion are at institutions who set aside funds just for such endeavors (Texas comes to mind) and even Duke has one page sheets for three of its “Awards Candidates” - Jon Scheyer, DeMarcus Nelson and Josh McRoberts.

. . . Tonight’s officials are Jamie Luckie, Mike Wood and Sean Hull.

. . . The words from the Duke game notes jump out with a huge shock value:

“. . .Duke has dropped four straight games since registering a 75-61 win over Boston College on Jan. 28.”

“. . . The four-game losing streak is the longest for the Blue Devils since a six-game skid midway through the 1994-95 season.”

“. .. Duke’s current losing streak is just the fifth four-game skid at Duke by a Mike Krzyzewski-led team.”

“. . . Duke has not lost more than four games in a row with Coach K on the bench.”

That last one is just stunning. Think of what Jeff Ruland went through at Iona this year with a 20-plus-game losing streak? And Coach K has never lost five in a row? I might be offering up the Big Man’s cell to Coach K post-game.

But, there are also these numbers to consider:

“The Blue Devils are 18th in the RPI and have the fourth toughest strength of schedule”

“The Blue Devils are 155-107 versus ranked teams under Krzyzewski, including a 68-28 mark since the 1997-98 season. Duke is 3-2 this season against ranked competition and 3-1 all-time against teams ranked 21st in the AP poll."

. . . BC's team barber Sean Marshall appears to have struck again as he is sporting a mohawk for the game and both he and Shamari Spears have carved designs into their hairdos.
