Halftime Stats and Observations

By David Scott - February 14, 2007

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Dick Vitale stopped by the Hang Time perch to say hello at the half and was stunned by the amount of lay-ups that BC gave up in the first 20 minutes.

The numbers support Vitale’s viewpoint: Duke scored 24 of its 43 points in the paint, out-rebounded the Eagles 19-8 and had 10 second-chance points to the Eagles’ three. Eleven of Duke’s 19 rebounds came off the offensive glass.

Both teams shot well, with BC hitting 58 percent from the field (3 of 5 from 3-point land) and Duke connecting on 55 percent (5 of 11 from the field).

. . . Josh McRoberts has been an all-out force with 12 points, eight rebounds and 6 of 10 shooting from the field. He alone, matched BC’s rebounding output for the half.

. . . Tyrese Rice, who we were praising for his improvement, is still prone to the turnover as he had 1 assist and 4 turns in the first half.

. . . BC needs to get a wake-up call at the half - and the return of Sean Williams wouldn’t hurt either. Since that’s not happening, BC’s other big men - John Oates, Tyrelle Blair and freshman Shamari Spears (two points, zero rebounds in the half) - are going to need assert themselves.
