Thursday Night Notes

By - February 08, 2007

Checking in from the Mack Sports Complex in Hempstead, N.Y., where Hofstra has sprinted to an early lead over visiting Drexel in a clash of two clubs desperate to remain on the NCAA tournament bubble. (With his a 16-foot jumper from the elbow, Hofstra senior Loren Stokes just became the fifth player in program history to join the 2,000-point club.)

Here are a couple notes that I axed from my Thursday column for length.

  • The sister of Brown coach Craig Robinson is married to Barack Obama, the Illinois senator and Democratic presidential candidate.

  • Dayton is 14-0 at home and 0-8 on the road. (The Flyers won their only game at a neutral site, a 68-64 decision over Louisville in Cincinnati.) Home cooking?

  • Speaking of home dominance, Wednesday’s victory over Bradley lifted Valley-leading Southern Illinois to an insane 77-3 in home games since the start of the 2001-02 season.

  • Just four teams still have undefeated records in conference play: Winthrop (10-0, Big South), Memphis (9-0, C-USA), Holy Cross (10-0 Patriot), Florida (9-0, SEC).

  • Embattled Michigan coach Tommy Amaker is 0-10 against Indiana.

  • Sloppy Joe’s was the prix fixe meal Tuesday on the Main Line in the latest installement of the Philadelphia Big 5's most heated individual rivalry. Despite starting 1-for-20 from three-point land (and finishing 3-for-22), Villanova managed to maintain a comfortable lead over archrival Saint Joseph's throughout a 56-39 victory. The Hawks, who shot a frigid 13-for-50 (26.0 percent) from the floor, posted the lowest point total for a single team in the storied history of the city series -- a performance which prompted Phil Martelli to issue this one-word assessment for the latest edition of the so-called Holy War: "Blasphemous."
