Tip in Two Minutes

By David Scott - February 08, 2007

AMHERST, Mass. - Both endzones are predominantly filled with students and the sideline seats (i.e. the locals) are starting to fill in.

As the Minutemen took the floor for the contest, a snippet of "Men in Black" was played on the video screens in each endzone. Nice touch. Although it's a bit surprising that UMass isn't weraing its alternate black uniforms.

. . . Keeping with the night's theme, UMass trainer Ron Laham is dressed in all-black. We have taken to calling him Ronny Cash for the remainder of the night.

. . . We were able to share some time with UMass assistant athletic director, Thorr Bjorn, just before the tip. One of the nation's finest and most kind-hearted administrators, Bjorn is riding the wave of UMass's recent athletic success (national runners-up in both lacrosse and football). "Things have been great," said Bjorn. "Hopefully we can keep it going."

Just an aside on Bjorn - back in his days as the ticket master for the athletic department, he was in charge of deciding when to open the doors to the arena. On especially cold nights, the students would chant, "Thorr, Thorr, Open the (Expletive deleted) door.

. . . The Minutemen are 7-2 at home this season and Rhody is 4-5 on the road.

. . . Rhody’s Jimmy Baron has hit a three-pointer in 32 consecutive games, dating back to last season.

. . . The Rhode Island bench has made a huge contribution in the last six games (5-1 during the stretch). Last time out at Fordham, Rhody’s bench outscored its “Rams-sake,” 11-4. In the last matchup against UMass on Jan. 24, Ram reserves totaled 25 points. At Saint Joseph’s on Jan. 13, Ram reserves poured in 33 points - led by
a career-best 17 points from Keith Cothran, while Joe Mbang had 10 and Lamonte Ulmer added six points.

Rhode Island is averaging 22.0 points off the bench so far this season.
