Tip Time

By David Scott - February 03, 2007

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – We’re just a few minutes from tip and Conte is slowly filling (it holds 8,606). The Hokies are in their road maroon unis with white trim and, as we’ve discusses, the Eagles are in gold with maroon trim.

Considering the last result when wearing gold, there’s a bit of anxiety on the part of some BC supporters, chiefly the dedicated radio play-by-play voice of the Eagles, Ted Sarandis, who is on record as “not liking the gold.”

We’re guessing Ted’s tune will change if the Eagles can pull out the W.

. .. BC athletic director, Gene DeFilippo, just made the rounds up and down press row and exchanged high fives with several of the BC supporters, including the radio team. There are few Ads in the country as prominent and friendly as DeFilippo.

. . . It’s tough to see a Virginia Tech game without thinking of the mid-90s star, Ace Custis, who was the subject of a big Sports Illustrated profile during his Hokie days.

In fact, when Virginia Tech moved into The Associated Press Top 25 poll for the
first time in more than a decade two weeks ago, it marked the highest the Hokies have been ranked since the 1995-96 season when the Custis-led club and then-defending NIT champions reached No. 8 during the week of Jan. 22, 1996.

We also bumped into this helpful “Catching Up With“ from Bob Lipper.

. . . The Hokies outstanding SID, Bill Dyer, a former Syracuse SID, is in his seventh year in Blacksburg and Hang Time was able to catch up with the big man a bit before the game. Dyer predicted that Dowdell has NBA potential and even is he’s not drafted, the senior will almost certainly get a look with some NBA team during camp. Dyer harkened back to Brian Chase an undersized, but feisty guard who is now with Los Angeles in the NBDL.

Dyer also raved about senior guard Jamon Gordon’s incredible defensive abilities, something that could be key as BC has experienced some trouble at the guard spot in terms of turnovers and bringing the ball up against pressure.

There are a handful of NBA scouts in the house this afternoon.
. . . Today’s sneaker battle will be waged between Reebok (BC) and Nike (Virginia Tech).

. . . Last year’s match-up in Conte Forum resulted in a 59-57 win for BC, where the Hokies had a chance to tie or win it at the buzzer. The Hokies have never won in Conte Forum (0-5).
