Welcome to Gampel, Where the Women are Practicing

STORRS, Conn. – Welcome to Gampel Pavillion for tonight’s Big East, Big Monday match-up between the host Huskies (14-8, 3-6) and the visiting Syracuse orange (16-7, 5-4). The game features the Big East’s two all-time winningest coaches in Jim Calhoun and Jim Boeheim.

Currently, the women’s team is practicing and not allowing the likes of us to sit courtside - for fear we might live-blog some important strategy. (The tension between women’s and men’s basketball programs is always evident in Storrs.)

It’s a “big” night on a number of fronts, not the least of which is that a win will help the Huskies in both their quest to make a post-season tournament AND to be in a better position to qualify for the Big East Tournament. UConn has lost five of its last six and Syracuse has lost three of the last four.

. . . In addition, it will be an emotional night in Gampel, as the Huskie’s “Ring of Honor” is dedicated at halftime with an inaugural class that will include coach Jim Calhoun, former coaches Hugh Greer (deceased) and Dee Rowe and former players, Emeka Okafor, Donyell Marshall, Ray Allen and Richard Hamilton. The complete list can be found here and the ceremony will also be webcast on the front page of UConnHuskies.com.

. . . With a win tonight, Jim Calhoun will have 500 in his career at UConn and with three more, he will reach 750 for his career.

. . . Tonight’s game is on ESPN with the broadcast trio of Sean McDonough on play-by-play and analysts Bill Raftery and Jay Bilas.

. . .Hang Time has been invited on a tour of the brand new $48 million Burton Family football complex, so we’re heading across the street to look at weights, a dining facility, indoor practice facility and “everything they need, form soup to nuts,” according to our tour guide, Leigh Torbin, the UConn football SID.
