ACC: 'Canes Don't Blow It

By - March 08, 2007

All of a sudden the small and relatively subdued Miami fan section mentioned in a previous post is sounding an awful lot louder as Jimmy Graham pops his jersey in jubilation. That's because the 'Canes just pulled off the first major upset of the event, withstanding a furious Maryland rally after the break to make a 14-point halftime lead hold up. Miami advances to meet fourth-seeded Boston College on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the throng of Terrapins that were seated to my rear aren't even waiting to get outside before hawking their ticket booklets.

RealTimeRPI.com calculates that Maryland's RPI has slipped to No. 11 with the loss -- so there's no danger of missing the NCAAs -- but who knows how lofty a seed the Terps could have secured with an extended run in Tampa. (As far as losses go, this is Maryland's worst loss of the season besides ... its loss to Miami on Jan. 10 in College Park.)

In the second season of the 12-team ACC tournament, the No. 12 seed has moved to 2-0 in the first round. Last season, No. 12-seeded Wake Forest rallied to upend fifth-seeded Florida State, 78-66.
