ACC: Finishing Strong

By - March 09, 2007

Carolina closed the first half with six unanswered points -- including four in the last six seconds -- to open a four-point lead into a double-digit advantage. And Leonard Hamilton is irate.

After Wayne Ellington drained a jumper with 6.0 seconds remaining, Ty Lawson swiped the ball from FSU's Jerel Allen. Lawson's lay-up attempt missed the target but Deon Thompson was there for the put-back as the buzzer sounded. I'm sure you could hear Hamilton screaming from the nosebleed seats because the lower level heard the coach as clear as day. (The display earned the coach a technical foul that will be shot at the beginning of the second half.)

Three numbers that jump out from the halftime box:

  • This should probably be a lot worse for Florida State. Carolina is 6-for-14 (42.9 percent) from the line while FSU is a perfect 8-for-8.

  • FSU has just two assists on their eight field goals. They're not going to beat the tournament's top seed playing as individuals.

  • Roy Williams has a reputation for employing an extended player rotation and today is no exception as 12 of his guys have seen action so far. In an effort to match Carolina's fresh legs, Hamilton has used 10 of his players.
