ACC: Potent Quotables

By - March 08, 2007

With Duke and North Carolina State about to meet for a Tobacco Road tangle, here are some highlights from this afternoon's post-game pressers:

  • "After going through the experience we went through last year, what I've learned is to worry about the things I can control. As we enjoy this victory for a few moments, we have to go and start preparing to win as many games as we can. I thought we earned the right to go last year but unfortunately my vote didn't count. So what I want to do now is just worry about the things we can control. We need to go and be prepared for a very good North Carolina team." --Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton on the NCAA tournament implications of his team's first-round victory over Clemson

  • "I missed on the first one, I was kind of nervous there. I've never been in that situation before. I was able to shoot the second one very relaxed and I shot it with confidence." --FSU's Al Thornton on his game-winning free throw with 1.5 seconds remaining

  • "You fear [not being invited] and as I said yesterday -- and I don't change my mind about what I think -- we've done enough to be in the NCAA tournament. But you fear that and you want to win as many games as you can. If we would have today and lost tomorrow, that would have been a fear [also] but in my opinion we've done enough to get in." --Clemson coach Oliver Purnell on his team's NCAA tournament prospects

  • "I can't speak of what this does for Florida. I just feel like this was good for our program and what we're trying to do. We've had some tough times this year. I'm really proud of our kids, how we hung in there. McClinton gets four fouls, Harris gets four fouls, we got one point guard and our kids found a way." --Miami coach Frank Haith on both Florida teams advancing in the first session

  • "Shooting jump shots without going inside. That was it. We had no patience whatsoever to attack their basket." --Maryland coach Gary Williams on the effectiveness of Miami's zone defense

  • "We definitely thought we were going to go a lot further. I don't think it was a confidence issue. I think we know how good we are and how well we can play -- we've just got to go out there and do it." --Maryland forward James Gist on a possible lack of confidence in Thursday's first-round loss to Miami
