ACC: Potent Quotables

By - March 09, 2007

Food for thought: Through six of the 11 games of this year's ACC tournament, there have been three overtime games played. No ACC tourney has ever had four.

Here are some highlights from the afternoon session's post-game pressers:

  • "I haven't won an ACC tournament championship since I came back and I'd love to do that myself. Everybody always acts like I pooh-pooh the ACC tournament because there's that thought process that you play people for nine weeks, why do you have to play them all again in three days? But it is what it is and since we're here I want to win this sucker. There's no question in my mind I'd like to win it. I'd like the world's largest cocktail party, for the Carolina Blue people to have more bragging rights than anybody else." --North Carolina coach Roy Williams on the importance of winning the ACC tournament

  • When you look at our strength of schedule, there aren't many teams in the country that have played more Top 40 teams than we have. So last year, we were 9-7 in the league and won 19 games overall, and I'm assuming the reason we didn't get in was strength of schedule. I don't know if there are very many teams that have played the type of schedule that we've played, so obviously we've corrected that. We haven't lost to anybody out of the Top 40 or 50 in RPI. We have been successful against at least four or five teams ranked in the Top 25 in the country. I think we play in what is the best league in the country. We were four out of five, or five out of six until Toney [Douglas] got hurt. Obviously we played our best basketball and we lost a very integral part of our system. It was very difficult for us to overcome that. But even with that, of those four or five games that we lost, a couple of them were on last possessions and two or three points here or there. ... You asked me to state my case. I hope you don't feel like I'm trying to make excuses for what we are, but I think that we ran into some adversity. I think the statistics prove from a numbers standpoint that we're a pretty good basketball team. We have met most of the criteria as I see it and as I understand it, and that justifies us having an opportunity to play." --Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton on his team's NCAA tournament prospects

  • "They have some long defenders and they made it tough on me. I really just didn't get into an offensive rhythm. I had some great looks and the ball just wasn't going in for me." --FSU's Al Thornton on the difference between his performance in Chapel Hill and today

  • "I'm really proud of these guys and we've gone through so much in terms of losing guys through suspensions, through injuries and this ballclub has found a way -- even in the last month of the season, we've really been playing well. We haven't always won, but we've started to play better. I think if you look at our ballclub, we have a lot of young talent -- a lot of freshmen and sophomores. I've got to believe if we continue to build on what we did in this tournament and in the last month of the season, we could have a special team." --Miami coach Frank Haith on his team's performance in the tournament
