ACC: Potent Quotables

By - March 10, 2007

A sampling from this afternoon's post-game pressers:

  • "By this time of year you should have been exposed to everything and you're not nearly as freshman-like as you were at the start of the year. We've played 33 games so they are experienced and kids these days are more worldly than they were 15 or 20 years ago. Most of the time -- even yesterday in their first ACC tournament game -- our first-, second-, and third-leading scorers were freshmen and today we had that same kind of scenario where all three guys in double-figures were freshmen." --North Carolina coach Roy Williams on his younger players stepping up

  • "We have team goals and intensity is a big thing. We always talk about it as a team. We haven't won an ACC tournament championship in a while and the guys on the team really want that." --UNC freshman Brandan Wright on the team's intensity at the beginning of the game

  • "I wouldn't say [that fatigue was a factor]. I would say that we just missed shots. I had good looks. I don't think fatigue has anything to do with missing lay-ups." --Boston College senior Jared Dudley on the impact of playing an extra period in his team's quarterfinal victory

  • "There are not many guys in the country his size that can run as well as [Brandan Wright] does. He's got good hands -- he catches the ball well in transition which is unique for a lot of big players. That's really what makes them go, because when he runs down the middle of the floor you have to be a little bit concerned about that -- it allows the wings to get open." --BC coach Al Skinner on Wright

  • "[A win on Sunday] would mean a great deal not just to N.C. State but to the fans and family. I think today is Coach Valvano's birthday so that's special. With the way we're doing it right now, it's very similar to what our fans saw in 1983. It wuld just be an outstanding accomplishment for this ballclub. As Gavin [Grant] said, we played 12 games without our starting point guard and, really, our only true point guard. These young men, they stayed in there, they hung in there and never complained. I told them keep fighting, keep staying together and good things will happen. I had no idea that we'd be playing in the ACC championship game but I told them every game here that special things happen in this tournament every year. Whether it's a player who emerges and becomes a great star or it's a team that does something special -- and I told them, 'Why not be that team?'" --North Carolina State coach Sidney Lowe on being a part of N.C. State's ACC tournament legacy

  • "An area that we really concentrated on and that we've improved on more than any other area this seasn is free throws. In league [play], I think we were over 70 percent and to not be able to step up to the line and make a free throw is a turnover. Obviously it set us back a tad." --Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg on the impact of his teams poor foul shooting
