ACC: Semifinal Saturday

By - March 10, 2007

As top-seeded North Carolina and fourth-seeded Boston College run through their lay-up lines -- before a decidedly pro-UNC crowd -- here are a few notes about today's action:

  • There have already been three 30-point scorers in this year's tournament, including two participants in today's semis: Boston College's Tyrese Rice poured in a career-high 32 points in yesterday's come-from-behind win over Miami and North Carolina State's Brandon Costner tallied 30 in his team's first-round victory against Duke. Georgia Tech's Thaddeus Young also scored 30 in his side's first-round loss to Wake Forest.

  • Costner, a redshirt freshman, has 52 points in two games -- and has an opportunity to catch the program's all-time leader for points in a single ACC tournament: David Thompson, who had 84 points in three games in 1975.

  • Boston College is bidding to return to the ACC tournament finals in its second season of membership. No other expansion team reached the finals in its first year. Virginia Tech seeks its first berth in the finals in its third ACC season.

  • N.C. State is third with 10 ACC tournaments won but has not been champion since 1987. The Wolfpack last appeared in the finals in 2003, when as a No. 4 seed it lost to Duke.

  • North Carolina has 15 titles, one fewer than Duke. The school's last championship came in 1998. UNC last appeared in the finals in 2001, when as the top seed it was defeated by Duke.
