ACC: Tampa Bay 'Pack-ers

By - March 10, 2007

It took an entire Atlantic Coast Conference season for No. 10-seeded North Carolina State to notch five victories. It's taken the first three days of the ACC tournament for first-year coach Sidney Lowe's Wolfpack to get three more.

With today's 72-64 victory over the third-seeded Hokies, North Carolina State has returned to the tournament finals for the first time since 2002. Though the Wolfpack rank third in the conference all-time with 10 tournament titles, State not gotten a chip since 1987.

Lowe is looking to repeat history with this team's unlikely run toward the ACC crown. As a player, the stocky guard led the fourth-seeded 'Pack to a suprise tourney title in 1983 (just weeks before an even-more-improbable national championship victory over Houston). As a coach, Lowe looks to match predecessor Herb Sendek's accomplishment of winning three ACC tourney games in his first season at the helm (which the current Arizona State mentor achieved in 1997). That team, which employed a six-man rotation like this year's 'Pack, remains the only team that has played four games in a single ACC tournament. Until this year's.

More to come from the post-game pressers.
