ACC: Yesterday And Today In Tampa

By - March 09, 2007

At the eight-minute media timeout, top-seeded and eighth-ranked North Carolina is holding a 21-17 lead over Florida State but the Seminoles are hanging tough thanks to All-American candidate Al Thornton. Some notes from last night's action:

  • This is the first time in ACC tournament history that the first four games -- or even the first three games -- were won by the lower-seeded teams. The lower seed won two of the first three games in 1973, 1977 and 1978 when the conference was a seven-team league and also in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2005.

  • Last night's Wake Forest-Georgia Tech marathon established a new tournament record with 226 combined points, trumping the existing mark (217) set by Maryland and N.C. State in their 1978 triple-overtime thriller. The 114 points by Wake and 112 points by Georgia Tech became the first- and second- highest totals for a single team in an ACC tournament game. The previous high was 109 (set by Maryland in that '78 game).

  • This is the second time that there were two overtimes in the same round of the ACC tournament. (The first occured during the '87 semifinals.)

  • N.C. State topped Duke for the first time since 1997, when the eighth-seeded 'Pack upended the top-seeded Blue Devils in the quarterfinals. Since then, Duke had advanced to nine consecutive ACC tournament title games (winning seven, including the last two).
