Big Ten: Before The Quarterfinals

By Phil Kasiecki - March 09, 2007

CHICAGO - Welcome to the United Center for the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. It's a little under 40 minutes to tip-off, Ohio State and Michigan are both warming up as we speak, and a decent number of fans could be seen trickling in. There was plenty of activity outside the arena with fans arriving and some trying to buy/sell tickets for today's games.

Michigan game notes are here and Ohio State game notes are here.

The general consensus is that Michigan needs this game to have any chance at an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. This would certainly be a quality win, but then one has to wonder if it's enough - after all, the Wolverines haven't exactly feasted on elite teams all season long. Well, the Wolverines' RPI is 53 entering the week, and beating Minnesota yesterday with their RPI of 178 probably won't boost it much prior to today's game. A Michigan win, in other words, would raise an interesting question for Selection Sunday if they then lose tomorrow.

We'll be back with more as we get closer to tip-off.
