Big XII: Day 2 Wrap-Up

By Jean Neuberger - March 10, 2007

It was one incredible day at the Big XII Tournament, and here are some of the highlights of what happened today in Oklahoma City.

TEAM OF THE DAY: Kansas
No doubt, the most impressive team of the day. Kansas showed how powerful they were, while at the same time remaining composed. The Jayhawks are a mature, polished team that's on a mission for a #1 NCAA seed and have hopes for a national championship, and today, they left no doubt that both could be done.

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Kevin Durant, Texas
I almost hate giving it to him, as he had 20 good minutes, not 40. Plus, once Diene was out of the game, that was when Durant was on his game. However, you can't ignore that he was the one-man team for Texas, and when someone's breaking tournament records, it becomes a no-brainer to give the award to Durant.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"If Coach Knight was here, he'd have left by now."
-Kansas Coach Bill Self, commenting on the technical problems with the microphone during the post-game press conference

BAND OF THE DAY: Kansas
No band keeps music up-tempo, while chanting and getting fans to cheer and sing along like the Jayhawk Band. They're always a whole lot of fun to watch during games.

POM SQUAD OF THE DAY: Oklahoma
I know our man Scotty (David Scott) has seen some great pom squads down in Atlanta, including my own alma mater. I've seen some great ones up here in Oklahoma City too. However, OU's stands out for the reason that not only were they nice enough to let me interview two of their girls, and not only did they get an entire arena to stand and clap, but, when taking the floor today before a routine, Sara Ball, one of the girls I interviewed, saw me on press row, smiled, waved, and mouthed a "Hi, Jean!" in my direction. Now THAT earns some props. You rock Sara!

FAN OF THE DAY:
I give it to the OSU fan behind the east goal, wearing a bright orange wig and orange body paint with a black O. This guy was jumping for 40 minutes....he got his exercise for sure.

VOLUNTEER OF THE DAY:
*- Ron, who's an usher on press row, has been fantastic in helping all of us with whatever we need, and I find it impressive that he remembers my name every single time I walk by.

And with that, we close Day 2 of the Big XII Tournament, and bid you good night from Oklahoma City, where today four teams ventured one step closer to an automatic ticket to the Big Dance.
