Buffalo: The Straw that Stirs the Terps

By David Scott - March 14, 2007

The Maryland media availability has ended and the subject of DJ Strawberry's famous father, Darryl, was one of the more discussed angles during the 15 minutes of access to James Gist, Mike Jones and Strawberry.

(Strawberry, along with Duke's Gerald Henderson and Davidson's Stephen Curry, are three of this site's players with ex-pro athletes as their dads.)

"My dad won't be able to make it here, to Buffalo," said DJ, who was named to the All-ACC defensive team and averaged a team-best 15.2 points and 4.3 rebounds. "But hopefully we can make it to St. Louis (the site of the Terps' regional) so he can see me."

Strawberry, in his senior year, also admitted that having the surname of an (in)famous former NY Met adds to the challenge of playing college basketball.

"You have the last name of a famous athlete and (the opponent) wants to try and embarass you because of it," said Strawberry, who has developed all aspects of his game under Gary Williams. "You just can't back down from any challenge, you have to want the challenge. You have to have a tough mindset and be ready for anything."

Said Williams, "DJ has obviously had a lot of attention since coming in as a freshman and you coach every player differently (regardless of who their parent is). At first he was very cautious about who who he would allow into his inner circle. He's become a great leader."

. . . The press conference moderator made the mistake of saying Maryland finished tied for third in the ACC. Williams, after waiting for the other credentials to be mentioned, corrected the moderator. "Tied for secon," he said.

Not exactly a Bobby Knight moment, but you still don't want to wrong tghe gruff Williams.

. . . Maryland has now taken the court for shootaround and the Butler pressers are underway. We'll be back with you soon.
