CAA: Dragons Advance, Pavarotti Sings

By David Scott - March 03, 2007

RICHMOND - Displaying tenacious defense, contributions up and down the roster and tremendous upperclass leadership, Drexel cruised to an 64-50 win over Northeastern.

The win puts Drexel at 23-7 and ends Northeastern's campaign with a 13-19 record.

Drexel will now face VCU on Sunday at 3 p.m. with a spot in Monday night's title gamed on the line. VCu won the teams' only meeting this season on Jan. 27 at Drexel, but the Dragons were without Frank Elegar who served a one game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct.

VCU's press will not likely have the same effect that it did today against Georgia State as Drexel has more experienced, composed guards. Drexel also has some bigger bodies that they will be able to muscle the Rams with.

. . .With 1:05 left in the game, the Drexel student section began chanting, "We Want VCU." The remaining VCU fans in the crowd, replied with a, "You got us!"

The Ram Greaseboard Writer (who wears a black hat with gold horns) sent a message: 'Be Careful what you wish for."

He erases the board with his rotund belly and the gold VCU Ram t-shirt he wears and followed up with a "See you tomorrow!" message.

Good stuff, that.

We even did a little background on the Greaseboard Guy and he's a 2006 graduate of VCU who has the birth name of Chris Crowley. A former manager for the basketball team, he is nicknamed "Pav," as in Pavarotti because, "I'm fat and I was a voice major and I sing opera."

Crowley actually likes Drexel, his second favorite CAA team, because of thier similar blue collar roots. "They're right in the city, like us."

Pav will be back in the house tomorrow and we'll be sure to chronicle his grease board writings.
