CAA: Mason Moves On

By David Scott - March 04, 2007

RICHMOND - It shouldn't be shocking to anyone who witnessed last year's magic, but George Mason is one win a way from a most improbable return to the NCAA tournament after dismissing ODU, 79-63.

Standing in its way will be No. 1 seed, VCU, the regular season champion of the CAA and the only CAA team to ever win 16 regular season conference games.

Mason will be the underdog of course, but that's a role this team seems to thrive on and even with 11,000 or so fans rooting against them on Monday night, there's no way we're about to doubt this team.

. . . Thanks to CSTV hoops maven, Bryan Graham, we're able to pass along this fabulous note pertaining to Mason's attempt to win four games in four days to gain its league's automatic bid:

These are the 10 times (and nine teams) that the feat has been accomplished:

Auburn (SEC, 1984), Nevada-Las Vegas (WAC, 1997), Marquette (C-USA, 1997), Charlotte (C-USA, 1999), Saint Louis (C-USA, 2000), Arkansas (SEC, 2000), Iowa (Big Ten, 2001), Siena (MAAC, 2002) and Xavier (Atlantic 10, 2004 and 2006).

. . .That'll be all from courtside. You can check in again tomorrow in the afternoon for a look ahead to the title game and we'll also be filing a regular edition of Cindy's Diary with a heavy CAA bent for Monday.

. . . Pav's message to the Mason fans: "Last year won't help you tomorrow night. GO RAMS!"
