Meadowlands: Two Hours Til Tip

By David Scott - March 23, 2007

We're about two hours from tip of Game 1 and the media types are starting to filter into the Continental Airlines Arena as the ushers are having a meeting under Section 219.

Our HO video man, Jake, has departed the "Hang Time" perch to venture out into the parking lot to find tailgaters and other degenerate basketball fans. We have great faith that the Meadowlands parking lot will provide him a steady stream of candidates to choose from. Can't wait for that video.

. . . Georgetown and Vanderbilt are meeting for the second time this season as the Hoyas won at Vandy on Nov.15, 86-70. Both teams have downplayed any significance of that game as it was early in the season and does not present nearly the same teams that were just being formed in that contest. Last season, Vandy beat Georgetown at the MCI Center (68-61). Still, the 16 point spread from this year is telling and is likely a big part of why the Hoyas are a substantial (in the 8 point area) favorite tonight. Georgetown leads the all-time series, 2-1 and is 17-14 all-time against SEC teams.

. . . Come to Xanadu with us, after the jump:

. . . The Meadowlands Sports Complex, which is home to both this arena and Giants Stadium, in in the midst of a major construction project called Meadowlands Xanadu which will include "America's first Snow Dome for indoor skiing." We have no idea why there is a need for a Snow Dome and from the sound of it the locals are a bit dismayed as well. The project has already had several snafus and hang-ups, but is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2008.

Coinciding with this project is the consrtcution in nearby Newark of a new arena for the New Jersey Devils and one in Brooklyn for the New Jersey Nets. Those two projects are going to leave the Continental Airlines Arena with a lot of open dates and it has also given rise to some speculation that this could be the final time an NCAA regional (or sub-regional) is held in the building.
