MVC: Creighton clinches NCAA bid

By Jerry Palm - March 04, 2007

Southern rallied, but it was too little, too late and Creighton advances to the NCAA tournament with a 67-61 win. You will not be surprised to learn that the fans CU fans have stormed the court and Queen's "We are the Champions" is blaring from the PA.

Creighton has now beaten SIU in the MVC title game four times in the last ten years.

The announcement hasn't been made yet, but Nate Funk ,who had 19 today, will be named the tournament MVP.

The ushers and others are trying to get a stage set up for the postgame presentations on the court, but it's taking a while because all the CU fans are on the floor.

This tournament blew away the attendance records. Today and yesterday were sellouts of 22.612 and the total for all five sessions was 85,074, almost 22,000 better than last year's total, which was the old record.

This was my first time attending this event. I've always watched it on TV because I'm a Midwestern guy and had at least a passing interest in these teams, long before I ever had a professional interest in them. Now, that I've seen it in person, I can see why it does so well. The level of play is good, the facility is nice and the competitiveness makes it a great show. I hope I get another chance to come back sometime.
