MVC: Drake advances

By Jerry Palm - March 01, 2007

Both teams seemed to have run out of gas in the OT. Drake got off to a good start by scoring the first four points and were able to hold off Evansville for a 101-96 win.

Josh Young finished with 23, including five three pointers, to lead five players in double figures for Drake.

Evansville was led by Matt Webster's 28 and Jason Holsinger's 26. Holsinger finished 8-13 from beyond the arc, and two of those came in the final seconds.

Drake's Klayton Korver is the younger brother of former Creighton star and two-time MVC player of the year Kyle.

Evansville's Jay Couisnard is the younger brother of current Wichita St player PJ.

Evansville was wearing a patch with the initials E.O. on it to honor Eric Ottens, a player on last year's team who died in a car accident about a year ago.

Drake is 17-14 and will finish above .500 for the first time since the 1986-87 season.

Drake's players decided to shave their heads for the tournament, except for three guys who had lame looking mohawks, although I suppose I should be the last guy to criticize the hair of another man.

How would you like to be Drake's play-by-play guy? He has to deal with names like Aliou Keita, Adam Emmenecker, Jacob Baryenbruch, Brent Heemskerk, and my personal favorite, Armel Traore dit Nignan.
